Arsenal's WSL title drought will only end when the goals start flowing

Arsenal and Manchester United did not need a statement to know where their Women's Super League seasons are drifting. Saturday's 1-1 draw was less a thriller than a mirror: two ambitious sides, plenty of possession, and not enough ruthlessness in the final third. For Arsenal, in particular, the result carried a familiar sting. The Gunners are desperate to end their WSL title drought, but droughts are not ended by moral victories or tidy build-up play. They are ended by goals.

The same old story for Arsenal

Arsenal's problem is not that they cannot create. It is that they do not convert enough of what they create. The 1-1 draw with Manchester United was a case in point: control without a killer edge, pressure without a decisive finish. In a league where Chelsea and Manchester City have set a punishing standard, Arsenal cannot afford to leave points on the table in matches they largely dictate. Manchester United will feel the same frustration. Their campaign has not gone to plan either, and a draw against a direct rival does little to settle the mood. Both teams arrived with top-four or title ambitions, yet both left with questions about consistency, chance creation and the ability to turn promising spells into points.

Why the draw matters

On its own, a 1-1 draw is not fatal. In the context of a title race, however, it is the kind of result that can define a season. Drop two points here, another two there, and the gap to the summit becomes psychological as much as mathematical. Arsenal know that better than most. Their WSL drought has stretched long enough that every missed opportunity feels heavier, especially when the teams around them keep finding ways to win.

Manchester United, meanwhile, are still searching for the consistency that turns a good project into a genuine title contender. The draw exposed the same issues that have held them back: bright moments, but no sustained control of the scoreboard. In a division as competitive as the WSL, that is a costly habit.

What it means going forward

For Arsenal, the message is clear. If they are serious about ending their WSL title drought, the attacking output must improve. That does not necessarily mean wholesale changes; it means sharper decision-making in the box, better movement in the final third, and a clinical edge in the moments that decide tight fixtures. The talent is there. The finishing must follow.

Manchester United face a similar crossroads. A draw at Arsenal is not a disaster, but it is not a statement either. Both clubs now head into the next block of fixtures knowing that the WSL table will not wait for them to find their rhythm. In a title race, goals are currency. Arsenal, more than anyone, need to start paying up.
